City Savvy Chickens

Chick Marda update.
Now that it's getting cold we have moved the girls into the city.
We need to keep an eye on them more in the winter, they tend to unplug their heaters and lights and water heaters while curiously pecking at the plugs.
Below r pics of the new coop and the girls.
And an inside view.

Baby Chick Marda

So we finally have a baby chick.
Daisy went broody a while back, unfortunetly her first setting of eggs
never hatched, and she began setting again.
Her second lot was a total of 16 eggs some of witch were Henriettas.
I had originally mentioned that i was concerned about the height of her chosen nest, and the possibility of one of the chicks falling.
Well a few weeks back now, Malcolm had stopped off in Andrew after a job out in that area, and found Daisy sitting in the middle of the coop on the floor.
He picked her up to put her back in her nest, and out ran a little chick from under her.
Malcolm put the 2 of them into the broody box we had made from her first batch of eggs.
When he felt the eggs she had left up in her nest he found that 1 had a bit of a beak peaking through and few of them had cracked.
My original thought was that 1 had fallen and that she went after it.
This was my big concern before.
But i don't believe this to be the case anymore.
I read alot about broody hens and the hatching process, and if there are eggs that dont hatch with in a certain amount of time the momma hen will push the unhatched eggs out of her nest.
Because of her chosen nest she couldn't do that.
After talking to my neighbour Guy, he said that if they were already cracking they would have hatched even if Daisy wasn't still sitting on them, and that it is most likely that she pushed the chick out and left the nest with her.
From what i have read, hatching from the egg is the first life test for the chicks, and if they cant break free it is generally because the are not strong enough to succeed and will not be healthy chicks.
I imagine she sat on the eggs for 1 or 2 days while they were hatching, and when they
weren't breaking free, she left the nest with her 1 hatchling.
Here is a video of our baby chick, Marda.

Itty Bitty Chickies

We have chickens.
Some of you know this already and for those who don't, you do now.
I am a big supporter of Back Yard Chickens
And Urban Chickens
We had Silkies before, and unfortunetly Malcolm brought home a large stray dog
who killed all three of them. :-(
We waited 2 yrs to get chickens again.
This time we got Austrolopes. They are much smarter and predator savvy.
They hide in the bushes and under the trailer when they are outside and we are not around.
Our Hen Daisy went broody recently. For those who dont know, that is when they start
laying for the purpose of hatching and sitting on their eggs.
She laid 12 eggs and when she was happy with the amount she had, she started sitting.
It has been 23 days as of today that she has been setting.
It takes from 21-28 days to hatch. I imagine that by tomorrow when i am back in Andrew that they will be hatched, and i will have 12 chickies.
I will have to post another video
as i have since then made her a broody box on the ground
walled and secured with a netting cover so she and her chicks are safe.
+ if they are hatched they will be a
Adorable.
TTFN.

Andrew Outside & the Moose Head.

Since my last post and video
I thought i should show everyone what i
meant by
a ridiculously big garden. (see video below)

Super excited about it this year.
i had a great veggie garden for 2 years, then
Malcolm took it over or the last 2 years....he wanted to try out his
green thumb......and yes the potatoes grew, and second year the spinach grew too
altho so did the weeds.
And as it turns out Malcolm can grow weeds really well......lol
He's not so big on the whole maintenance and weeding thing.
Back to the point.......My garden.
This year i am growing corn for the first time and i did 3 rows of peaches and cream corn.
Russet and Yellow Banana Potatoes or Fingerings, Carrots, and Radishes.
The rest well have to wait till the second week of June. I'll put the rest in as plants

Dad and Malcolm put in an amazing picture window
in the Andrew house
I put it in the video So you could see that too.
:-)

Also we have a moose head and antlers that is in the process of decaying thanks to the flies and maggots. as soon as it is mostly meatless i will clean it up better and then up it goes.
its a great rack (that what he said) and it is just under a trophy size.
Trophy size is 60inches across and this rack is 58inches.
Someone had shot this buck during hunting season, and from what we could tell, and what is common, he was in a field far out from the road and the SOBs didn't bother to go get their kill cause it was too much work to trudge through the field to go get him. A friend found him in January while he was out on a snowmobile trip. Mal and him went back to get the rack for me.
I have wanted a moose rack for years.
And that too makes a little cameo in the video..... no worries i dont show the head.

homes checked for child pornography, i mean COME ON.
